Tasting Notes
In a combination of small and larger format French Oak barrels and another 8 months in bottle, our single vineyard Sonoma Valley Tempranillo exhibits bright aromas and flavors of pomegranate, cinnamon, ripe cherry, strawberries, with a touch of dill. These lead into hints of dark chocolate, a sweet blonde tobacco, and dried floral aromas and flavors. The well balanced acidity and mature tannins, help round out this 100% varietal Tempranillo.
Vineyard Notes
As with most things in the wine industry, things happen by chance. In our case, a small hillside vineyard right along the Glen Ellen and Kenwood line was planted to four different clones of Tempranillo. As lovers of Spanish varietals we wanted to make the perfect Tempranillo without simply mimicking Spain. Our hands off approach allowed us to observe what each Tempranillo clone would provide, and create a wine that stood as a pure expression of the Sonoma land. Wanting to make a great Tempranillo, we waited until the vineyard was 5 years old before picking our first harvest and took a very hands off approach to see what each clone would give us. We wanted a pure expression of the property and not try and force it to be something it wasn’t. We’re not looking for Rioja, we’re not looking for Ribera del Duero, we’re looking for Covey Hill. Just as the great Cabernet Sauvignon estates of Napa are not looking to represent Bordeaux, we’re not looking to mimic Spain.
